Sorogain

Border territory

The border shapes the character of its inhabitants. Every border imposes a dividing line while also creating a shared identity among the people living on both sides.

Explore a territory shaped by the experiences of the border.

Sorogain is a borderland territory where history, culture, and ways of life have been built on both sides of the frontier.
QUINTO REAL Quinto Real is a territory historically shared between valleys, where forest uses have been regulated through agreements and customs. SMUGGLING Smuggling was part of the valley’s economy during times of scarcity, using traditional routes and deep knowledge of the land. Women played an equally important yet often invisible role, participating through warning systems for smuggling networks and offering support and shelter from their homes.

THE EZKABA ESCAPE
The escape from San Cristóbal Fortress in 1938 turned Sorogain into a passage toward freedom, leaving a deep mark on the memory of the place.

THE MAN OF LOIZU
The oldest known inhabitant of Navarre, the Man of Loizu, was discovered in Errotalde I cave between Loizu and Aintzioa, just 14 km from Sorogain.
